On Wearing

Rhys James

Jewellery is rarely understood at the moment it is first worn.

What begins as something considered gradually becomes instinctive, settling into place until it is no longer adjusted, no longer observed, but simply there.

A ring, in particular, reveals this shift. Its weight becomes familiar, its presence assumed, moving with the wearer through the day without interruption or thought.

In this way, the relationship changes. What was once separate becomes integrated, no longer held apart as an object, but absorbed into how one moves and gestures.

Light plays its role quietly too, changing with time and setting and allowing the piece to respond without insistence. Over time, surfaces soften, edges ease and gold takes on a more subdued finish, not as wear, but as a record of contact.

What emerges cannot be designed in full. It develops through wearing, through moments that pass unnoticed, yet leave their trace. Over time, the piece becomes familiar, worn without adjustment and without thought.
