Guidance
Considered guidance on bespoke commissions, diamonds and private appointments.
What is a private jeweller?
A private jeweller offers a more considered and personal experience than traditional retail. At Rhys James, each commission is approached individually, with an emphasis on proportion, materiality, meaning and enduring design.
Why work with a private jeweller?
Working with a private jeweller allows for a more personal and considered process. Decisions regarding design, materials and diamonds are approached individually, resulting in pieces that reflect the wearer rather than prevailing trends.
What is a jewellery maison?
A jewellery maison is a house of design and craftsmanship built around a distinct creative vision. Rather than focusing solely on the sale of jewellery, a maison is defined by its philosophy, aesthetic identity and commitment to creating pieces of lasting significance.
What makes Rhys James different from other jewellers?
Rhys James is an independent Australian jewellery maison founded on the principles of Beauty, Rarity and Legacy. Every piece is personally designed by Rhys James and created in collaboration with a trusted team of specialist craftspeople. The Maison accepts a limited number of commissions each year.
Who designs the jewellery at Rhys James?
All Rhys James jewellery is personally designed by Rhys James, Creative Director and founder of the Maison. A De Beers Award-winning jewellery designer, he works across both bespoke commissions and signature collections, overseeing each piece from concept through to completion.
Where is Rhys James based?
Rhys James is based in Melbourne, Australia and works with private clients locally and internationally by appointment. Appointments take place in a private consultation suite overlooking Melbourne. Designed for conversation rather than display, the space provides a discreet setting in which to explore bespoke commissions, engagement rings and fine jewellery collections.
What defines a bespoke commission?
A bespoke commission begins with conversation. Each piece is developed in response to the individual, resulting in an object that reflects personal meaning, refined proportion and contemporary form.
How long does the bespoke process take?
Timeframes vary depending on complexity, materials and stone selection. Most bespoke commissions are completed within approximately six to twelve weeks from final approval.
Are Rhys James pieces made to order?
Most Rhys James pieces are specially made to order in Australia. This allows each object to be finished with exceptional care while reducing unnecessary production and excess.
What diamonds does Rhys James use?
Rhys James works exclusively with natural diamonds selected for their beauty, rarity and character. Each stone is carefully sourced through trusted international partners and chosen for its individual qualities, with an emphasis on exceptional cut, colour and clarity.
What gemstones does Rhys James work with?
Rhys James works with exceptional diamonds and coloured gemstones selected for their beauty, rarity and character. These include sapphires, emeralds, rubies and a range of other precious stones chosen according to the requirements of each piece.
Why choose a natural diamond?
Natural diamonds possess rarity formed over billions of years. For many clients, this enduring geological origin carries emotional and symbolic significance beyond appearance alone.
Can Rhys James source specific diamonds?
Through an international sourcing network, Rhys James can access a wide range of exceptional natural diamonds, including rare cuts, larger stones and highly specific characteristics.
What does By Private Appointment mean?
Rhys James works privately with a limited number of clients each year. Consultations are conducted by appointment, allowing time for considered discussion, design development and personalised service.
Are appointments private?
Appointments are conducted privately and with discretion, allowing time for thoughtful discussion, diamond viewing and design exploration.
Does Rhys James disclose private client information?
Privacy and discretion form an important part of the Rhys James approach. Client identities, commission details and personal information are treated confidentially and are not publicly disclosed without permission.
Who are Rhys James clients?
Rhys James works with private individuals, families and collectors in Australia and internationally. In keeping with the discreet nature of many commissions, client identities and project details are generally treated as confidential unless clients choose otherwise.
Does Rhys James work with international clients?
Rhys James works with clients throughout Australia and internationally. Consultations may be conducted in person or remotely depending on location.
Does Rhys James ship internationally?
Yes. Each piece is carefully prepared and dispatched using secure, fully insured and trackable delivery services, ensuring a discreet and seamless experience from Melbourne to its final destination.
Can existing jewellery be remodelled or reimagined?
Selected commissions may involve the remodelling of existing jewellery or heirloom stones. Each project is approached carefully, with respect for both the original object and its future expression.
